Honduras, like many parts of the world, faces challenges in providing quality education to young children. Many families live in poverty, as it is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, and early childhood education is almost nonexistent, especially in our part of the country. This contributes to the feeling of "living in a hole" that pervades this country. Poor health, broken families, excessive violence, broken economy, and corruption are the everyday reality.
The vision for this initiative is simple: to create a Christ-centered learning environment that supports the whole child – mind, body, and spirit. Envisioned is a space where children are loved, taught, and given the tools to build strong futures. This will be a space for hands-on learning, as well as a safe space for all who enter! The goal is not only to impact the lives of these children but to create a ripple effect in their families and communities.
Education has become a powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty and providing opportunities for a better future. By adding a preschool and kindergarten program, it gives us more time to pour into, not only the student but their entire family for a longer period of time. Since our Education Center opened in 2022, we have received near-weekly phone calls asking if we have classes for this age group and we have had to turn them away. We are so excited to now be able to provide classes for them and already have a list of interested families.
Maddie Shae Davis will be joining the leadership team of the Undertow Center and will be the principal instructor in the Discovery Center. "Shae," as we call her, has spent over half of her life in Central America between Guatemala and Honduras. She is fully bilingual and is more Honduran than American in so many ways
Shae was homeschooled, giving her a significant educational advantage. As a result, she has cultivated an amazing ability to learn and loves to read and discover creative ways to educate. She is graduating summa cum laude from Georgia Southern University this December.
Shae spent the covid years teaching in Honduras as the country was shut down. She excelled in this and has shown great leadership. She is currently demonstrating excellence in the Tybee Island Maritime Academy. She is also a blue belt in Krav Maga and is a certified instructor in the discipline. She will be a great addition to our leadership team in the gym.
