When you read scripture, it is a story of a connection between the Creator and his creation. And He teaches His creation how to connect among themselves. For us, that is significant, and worth understanding. It appears that connections are catalysts for God's work. The Undertow Center stems from that realization.
We wanted to create a place where people could come and find a connection. And in finding a connection, they could catch a glimpse of God and hear more about Him. They could connect with others who were also interested in connection. And through all of this, be exposed to the truth of who God is.
With that in mind, we planted the Undertow Center.
Living in a port city brings a lot of international flair and opportunity. Just as our family has had to become a bilingual family, so too, many here have a desire to become bilingual.
To be able to speak English increases a person's ability to take advantage of opportunities and potentially increase economic standards in the house. This has a domino effect on a family. Better health, better education, better resources, etc. When that family is tuned into God, it also creates generous opportunities for community engagement.
This is a very tangible way to affect change in our community and the lives of our friends and neighbors here. It is a long-term engagement that brings great potential for the future.
We offer English engagement classes for all levels. In addition, we provide tutoring for the various bilingual school families in the area. There is also a work lab and an ever-growing library in the learning center for those trying to improve employment opportunities by taking advantage of independent study time and resources.
This is a relatively violent and insecure community. Not a day goes by where an assault isn't reported in the news, or simply among friends. Rape and murder are too common here. A baseline feeling of dread underlies a lot of what goes on here. People feel insecure. All of that comes from a disconnect from the Creator, and so we address this disconnect daily.
In addition, a very tangible way to address this need is through learning how to manage your physical abilities and use them in self-defense, so we teach Krav Maga to our community. Krav Maga means "contact combat" and is based on using instincts to address the immediate danger. Krav Maga was developed in the 40s-50s in Israel as the need to defend against fascism was real. We are part of the AKMF (American Krav Maga Federation) in the US. In 2023 we won the "Best School" award inside the organization. As a top-level training gym here in Puerto Cortes, we are uniquely positioned to make an impact. We are the only Krav Maga school in all of Honduras. Today, Krav is used by military and police forces all over the world.
We try to attract the older generation to come alongside the younger and provide example, guidance, and toughness. In this community, like many others, the older "experienced" have been cast aside at just the point of most impact in their life. We believe a healthy community, a Godly community has the appropriate relationship of older guiding the younger (Titus 2).
It's one thing to fight! It's another thing to look good fighting! Join our gym and work your way through belts and collect cool gear!
Several times a month we gather to fight! Sounds contrary to what would seem normal, but when we fight, we feel more connected as a group! It is pretty fantastic! We practice fighting with strikes and kicks, as well as from the floor with jiu-jitsu! Always a blast!
Youth...no matter where you go there are a bunch of them, and they are looking for something. We meet regularly in our house with youth. We do dedicated Bible studies where we dig in and teach youth how to study the Book. How to pull out what is good and true about this text. We also just open the gates and welcome youth for pizza, games and hanging out. All the normal hangout activity minus the danger of bad news stuff. We also hike into the jungle on regular occasions to experience God in his creation.
Your support of us as a family and what we are involved in here is very important to us. We do not take it lightly. Thank you in advance for partnering with us! Please click below to financially contribute to In the Undertow!
